Abstract

This book is an attempt to fill this need, and to present a global picture of aquaculture as practised. As the main objective of the book is to present subsistence and commercial aquaculture, only culture systems of major species groups that presently contribute to production, or are likely to do so in the near future, are described. Due to space limitations many of the descriptions have had to be abbreviated and data, especially economic data that are not very recent, omitted. My exposure to aquaculture in developing countries for about three decades has prompted me to lay greater emphasis on practical low-level technologies that have resulted in cost-effective production.
